Jesus Before Pilate

¹Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.

²"Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate.
"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied.

³The chief priests accused him of many things. ⁴So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of."

⁵But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.

⁶Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested. ⁷A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. ⁸The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

⁹"Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate, ¹⁰knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. ¹¹But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.

¹²"What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked them.

¹³"Crucify him!" they shouted.

¹⁴"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"

¹⁵Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

¹⁶The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. ¹⁷They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. ¹⁸And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" ¹⁹Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. ²⁰And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

²¹A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. ²²They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). ²³Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. ²⁴And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.

²⁵It was the third hour when they crucified him. ²⁶The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. ²⁷They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left. ²⁹Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, ³⁰come down from the cross and save yourself!"

³¹In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! ³²Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus

³³At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. ³⁴And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"—which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

³⁵When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah."

³⁶One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said.

³⁷With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

³⁸The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. ³⁹And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son of God!"

⁴⁰Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. ⁴¹In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.

The Burial of Jesus

⁴²It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, ⁴³Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. ⁴⁴Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. ⁴⁵When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. ⁴⁶So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. ⁴⁷Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

محاکمه در حضور پیلاتُس

۱بامدادان، بی‌درنگ، سران کاهنان همراه با مشایخ و علمای دین و تمامی اعضای شورای یهود به مشورت نشستند و عیسی را دستبسته بردند و به پیلاتُس تحویل دادند.۲پیلاتُس از او پرسید: «آیا تو پادشاه یهودی؟» عیسی پاسخ داد: «تو خود چنین می‌گویی!»۳سران کاهنان اتهامات بسیار بر او می‌زدند.۴پس پیلاتُس باز از او پرسید: «آیا هیچ پاسخی نداری؟ ببین چقدر بر تو اتهام می‌زنند!»۵ولی عیسی باز هیچ پاسخ نداد، چندانکه پیلاتُس در شگفت شد.

۶پیلاتُس را رسم بر این بود که هنگام عید، یک زندانی را به تقاضای مردم آزاد کند.۷در میان شورشیانی که به جرم قتل در یک بلوا به زندان افتاده بودند، مردی بود بارْاَبّا نام.۸مردم نزد پیلاتُس آمدند و از او خواستند که رسم معمول را برایشان به‌جای آورد.۹پیلاتُس از آنها پرسید: «آیا می‌خواهید پادشاه یهود را برایتان آزاد کنم؟»۱۰این را از آن‌رو گفت که دریافته بود سران کاهنان عیسی را از سَرِ رشک به او تسلیم کرده‌اند.۱۱امّا سران کاهنان جمعیت را برانگیختند تا از پیلاتُس بخواهند به‌جای عیسی، بارْاَبّا را برایشان آزاد کند.۱۲آنگاه پیلاتُس بار دیگر از آنها پرسید: «پس با مردی که شما او را پادشاه یهود می‌خوانید، چه کنم؟»۱۳دیگربار فریاد برآوردند که: «بر صلیبش کن!»۱۴پ

یلاتُس از آنها پرسید: «چرا؟ چه بدی کرده است؟» امّا آنها بلندتر فریاد زدند: «بر صلیبش کن!»۱۵پس پیلاتُس که می‌خواست مردم را خشنود سازد، بارْاَبّا را برایشان آزاد کرد و عیسی ر

ا تازیانه زده، سپرد تا بر صلیبش کِشند.

استهزای عیسی

مَرقُس ۱۵:‏۱۶-۲۰ - مَتّی ۲۷:‏۲۷-۳۱

۱۶آنگاه سربازان، عیسی را به صحن کاخ، یعنی کاخ والی، بردند و همۀ گروه سربازان را نیز گرد هم فراخواندند.

۱۷سپس خرقه‌ای ارغوا

نی بر او پوشانیدند و تاجی از خار بافتند و بر سرش نهادند.۱۸آنگاه شروع به تعظیم کرده، می‌گفتند: «درو

د بر پادشاه یهود!»۱۹و با چوب بر سرش می‌زدند و آبِدهان بر او انداخته، در برابرش زانو می‌زدند و ادای احترام می‌کردند.۲۰پس از آنکه استهزایش کردند، خرقۀ ارغوانی را از تنش به‌در آورده، جامۀ خودش را بر او پوشاندند. سپس وی را بیرون بردند تا بر صلیبش کشند.

بر صلیب شدن عیسی

۲۱آنها رهگذری شَمعون نام از مردم قیرَوان را که پدر اسکندر و روفُس بود و از مزارع می‌آمد، واداشتند تا صلیب عیسی را حمل کند.۲۲پس عیسی را به مکانی بردند به نام جُلجُتا، که به‌معنی مکان جمجمه است.۲۳آنگاه به او شرابِ آمیخته به مُر دادند، امّا نپذیرفت.۲۴سپس بر صلیبش کشیدند و جامه‌هایش را بین خود تقسیم کرده، برای تعیین سهم هر یک قرعه انداختند.

۲۵ساعت سوّم از روز بود که او را بر صلیب کردند.۲۶بر تقصیرنامۀ او نوشته شد: «پادشاه یهود.»۲۷دو راهزن را نیز با وی بر صلیب کشیدند، یکی در سمت راست و دیگری در سمت چپ او. ۲۸[بدینگونه آن نوشتۀ کتب‌مقدّس تحقق یافت که می‌گوید: «او از خطاکاران محسوب شد.»]۲۹رهگذران سرهای خود را تکان داده، ناسزاگویان می‌گفتند: «ای تو که می‌خواستی معبد را ویران کنی و سه روزه آن را بازبسازی،۳۰خود را نجات ده و از صلیب فرود‌آ!»۳۱سران کاهنان و علمای دین نیز در میان خود استهزایش می‌کردند و می‌گفتند: «دیگران را نجات داد امّا خود را نمی‌تواند نجات دهد!۳۲بگذار مسیح، پادشاه اسرائیل، اکنون از صلیب فرود آید تا ببینیم و ایمان بیاوریم.» آن دو تن که با او بر صلیب شده بودند نیز به او اهانت می‌کردند.

مرگ عیسی

مَرقُس ۱۵:‏۳۳-۴۱ - مَتّی ۲۷:‏۴۵-۵۶؛ لوقا ۲۳:‏۴۴-۴۹

۳۳از ساعت ششم تا نهم، تاریکی تمامی آن سرزمین را فراگرفت.۳۴در ساعت نهم، عیسی با صدای بلند فریاد برآورد: «ایلویی، ایلویی، لَمّا سَبَقْتَنی؟» یعنی «خدای من، خدای من، چرا مرا واگذاشتی؟»۳۵برخی از حاضران چون این را شنیدند، گفتند: «گوش دهید، الیاس را می‌خواند.»۳۶پس شخصی پیش دوید و اسفنجی را از شراب ترشیده پر کرد و بر سر چوبی نهاده، پیش دهان عیسی برد تا بنوشد، و گفت: «او را به حال خود واگذارید تا ببینیم آیا الیاس می‌آید او را از صلیب پایین آورد؟»۳۷پس عیسی به بانگ بلند فریادی برآورد و دمِ آخر برکشید.۳۸آنگاه پردۀ محرابگاه از بالا تا پایین دوپاره شد.۳۹چون فرماندۀ سربازان که در برابر عیسی ایستاده بود، دید او چگونه جان سپرد، گفت: «براستی این مرد پسر خدا بود.»

۴۰شماری از زنان نیز از دور نظاره می‌کردند. در میان آنان مریم مَجْدَلیّه، مریم مادر یعقوب کوچک و یوشا، و سالومه بودند.۴۱این زنان هنگامی که عیسی در جلیل بود، او را پیروی و خدمت می‌کردند. بسیاری از زنان دیگر نیز که همراه او به اورشلیم آمده بودند، در آنجا بودند.

خاکسپاری بدن عیسی

لوقا ۲۳:‏۵۰-۵۶؛ یوحنا ۱۹:‏۳۸-۴۲

۴۲آن روز، روز «تهیه»، یعنی روز پیش از شَبّات بود. پس هنگام غروب۴۳یوسف نامی از مردم رامه، که عضوی محترم از شورای یهود بود و انتظار پادشاهی خدا را می‌کشید، شجاعانه نزد پیلاتُس رفت و پیکر عیسی را طلب کرد.۴۴پیلاتُس که باور نمی‌کرد عیسی بدین زودی درگذشته باشد، فرماندۀ سربازان را فراخواند تا ببیند عیسی جان سپرده است یا نه.۴۵چون از او دریافت که چنین است، پیکر عیسی را به یوسف سپرد.۴۶یوسف نیز پارچه‌ای کتانی خرید و جسد را از صلیب پایین آورده، در کتان پیچید و در مقبره‌ای که در صخره تراشیده شده بود، نهاد. سپس سنگی جلو دهانۀ مقبره غلتانید.۴۷مریم مَجْدَلیّه و مریم، مادر یوشا، دیدند که عیسی کجا گذاشته شد.
