Age of the spirit

Age of the spirit: John 16:5-16, Eph 1:13-14, Luke 24:49, Acts 2, Rom 8

John 16:5-16

5: But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'
6: But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.
7: Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don't go away, the Counselor won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
8: When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment;9: about sin, because they don't believe in me;10: about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you won't see me any more;11: about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged.12: "I have yet many things to tell you, but you can't bear them now.
13: However when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming.
14: He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine, and will declare it to you.
15: All things whatever the Father has are mine; therefore I said that he takes{TR reads "will take" instead of "takes"} of mine, and will declare it to you.
16: A little while, and you will not see me. Again a little while, and you will see me."

Ephesians 1:13-14

13: in whom you also, having heard the word of the truth, the gospel of your salvation,--in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,14: who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of his glory.

Resurrection

Resurrection: Luke 24:13-32, Luke 24:44-47, 1Cor 15:14-19, Rom 8:34

Luke 24:13-32

13: Behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia{60 stadia = about 11 kilometers or about 7 miles.} from Jerusalem.
14: They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened.
15: It happened, while they talked and questioned together, that Jesus himself came near, and went with them.
16: But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
17: He said to them, "What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?"18: One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who doesn't know the things which have happened there in these days?"
19: He said to them, "What things?" They said to him, "The things concerning Jesus, the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;20: and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.
21: But we were hoping that it was he who would redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
22: Also, certain women of our company amazed us, having arrived early at the tomb;23: and when they didn't find his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.
24: Some of us went to the tomb, and found it just like the women had said, but they didn't see him."25: He said to them, "Foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!
26: Didn't the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?"27: Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
28: They drew near to the village, where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.
29: They urged him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over." He went in to stay with them.
30: It happened, that when he had sat down at the table with them, he took the bread and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave to them.
31: Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished out of their sight.32: They said one to another, "Weren't our hearts burning within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?"

Luke 24:44-47

44: He said to them, "This is what I told you, while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me must be fulfilled."
45: Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures.
46: He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,47: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Purpose

Purpose: John 6:38-40, Mark 8:31-34, Mark 9:30-32, Mark 10:32-34

John 6:38-40

38: For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
39: This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day.
40: This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son, and believes in him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

Mark 8:31-34

31: He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
32: He spoke to them openly. Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.
33: But he, turning around, and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you have in mind not the things of God, but the things of men."34: He called the multitude to himself with his disciples, and said to them, "Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Immanuel

Immanuel: John 14:8-11, Isaiah 7:14, John 1:14, Col 1:15, Col 1:19-20, Heb 1:1-4

John 14:8-11

8: Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us."9: Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, 'Show us the Father?'
10: Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works.
11: Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works' sake.

Good news at last

Good news at last: Luke 4:14-21, Mark 1:14-15, Mark 2:1-14, John 3:16, John 10, John11:25-27

Luke 4:14-21

14: Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and news about him spread through all the surrounding area.
15: He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
16: He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.17: The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the book, and found the place where it was written,18: "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, Because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim release to the captives, Recovering of sight to the blind, To deliver those who are crushed,19: And to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."20: He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21: He began to tell them, "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

Mark 2:1-14

1: When he entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was heard that he was in the house.
2: Immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even around the door; and he spoke the word to them.3: Four people came, carrying a paralytic to him.
4: When they could not come near to him for the crowd, they removed the roof where he was. When they had broken it up, they let down the mat that the paralytic was lying on.
5: Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven you."6: But there were some of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,7: "Why does this man speak blasphemies like that? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
8: Immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you reason these things in your hearts?9: Which is easier, to tell the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven;' or to say, 'Arise, and take up your bed, and walk?'
10: But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--he said to the paralytic--11: "I tell you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your house."
12: He arose, and immediately took up the mat, and went out in front of them all; so that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"13: He went out again by the seaside. All the multitude came to him, and he taught them.
14: As he passed by, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he arose and followed him.

Preparation

Preparation: Mark 1:1-8; John 1:28-34

1: The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.2: As it is written in the prophets, "Behold, I send my messenger before your face, Who will prepare your way before you.3: The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord! Make his paths straight!'"4: John came baptizing{To baptize means to immerse in (or wash with) water (or fire). This baptizm is not just to cleanse the body, but as an outward sign of an inward spiritual cleansing and commitment.} in the wilderness and preaching the baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins.5: All the country of Judea and all those of Jerusalem went out to him. They were baptized by him in the Jordan river, confessing their sins.6: John was clothed with camel's hair and a leather belt around his loins. He ate locusts and wild honey.7: He preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and loosen.8: I baptized you in{The Greek word (en) translated here as "in" could also be translated as "with" in some contexts.} water, but he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit."

Silence is broken

Silence is broken: Matt 1:21; Luke 1:26-33; Luke 1:67-80; Luke 2:25-35; Matt 2

21: She shall bring forth a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins."

Luke 1:67-80

67: His father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,68: "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, For he has visited and worked redemption for his people; 69: And has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70: (As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets who have been from of old), 71: Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us;72: To show mercy towards our fathers, To remember his holy covenant,73: The oath which he spoke to Abraham, our father,74: To grant to us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, should serve him without fear,75: In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.76: And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, For you will go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways,77: To give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins,78: Because of the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the dawn from on high will visit us,79: To shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace."80: The child was growing, and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the desert until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

God’s covenant with David

God’s covenant with David – promising land, blessings, relationship with God and people (descendants), plus a shepherd (king), and eternal rule (a dwelling for God) – unconditionally available to all

2Samuel 7: 5-16

5: Go and tell my servant David, Thus says Yahweh, Shall you build me a house for me to dwell in?6: for I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tent.7: In all places in which I have walked with all the children of Israel, spoke I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedar?8: Now therefore thus shall you tell my servant David, Thus says Yahweh of Hosts, I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people, over Israel;9: and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are in the earth.10: I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first,11: and [as] from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will cause you to rest from all your enemies. Moreover Yahweh tells you that Yahweh will make you a house.12: When your days are fulfilled, and you shall sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who shall proceed out of your bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.13: He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.14: I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;15: but my loving kindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.16: Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before you: your throne shall be established forever.

God’s covenant with Moses

God’s covenant with Moses – promising land, blessings, relationship with God and people (descendants), plus holiness (blessing/ curses) – conditional on obedience

Exodus 19: 3-9

3: Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him out of the mountain, saying, "This is what you shall tell the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:4: 'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to myself.5: Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice, and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine;6: and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel."7: Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which Yahweh commanded him.8: All the people answered together, and said, "All that Yahweh has spoken we will do." Moses reported the words of the people to Yahweh.9: Yahweh said to Moses, "Behold, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever."
