Jesus Anointed at Bethany

¹Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus and kill him. ²"But not during the Feast," they said, "or the people may riot."

³While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

⁴Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, "Why this waste of perfume? ⁵It could have been sold for more than a

year's wages and the money given to the poor." And they rebuked her harshly.

⁶"Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. ⁷The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. ⁸She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. ⁹I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

¹⁰Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. ¹¹They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he

watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

The Lord's Supper

¹²On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"

So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. ¹⁴Say to the owner of the house he enters, 'The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' ¹⁵He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there."

¹⁶The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

¹⁷When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. ¹⁸While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me."

¹⁹They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, "Surely not I?"

²⁰"It is one of the Twelve," he replied, "one who dips bread into the bowl with me. ²¹The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."

²²While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it; this is my body."

²³Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank from it.

²⁴"This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many," he said to them. ²⁵"I tell you the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God."

²⁶When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial

²⁷"You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written:
" 'I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.' ²⁸But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."

²⁹Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not."

³⁰"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times."

³¹But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same.

³²They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." ³³He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. ³⁴"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch."

³⁵Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. ³⁶"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."

³⁷Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? ³⁸Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

³⁹Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. ⁴⁰When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

⁴¹Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴²Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

Jesus Arrested

⁴³Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

⁴⁴Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard." ⁴⁵Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him. ⁴⁶The men seized Jesus and arrested him. ⁴⁷Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

⁴⁸"Am I leading a r

ebellion," said Jesus, "that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? ⁴⁹Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled." ⁵⁰Then everyone deserted him and fled.

⁵¹A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, ⁵²he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Before the Sanhedrin

⁵³They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, elders and teachers of the law came together. ⁵⁴Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.

⁵⁵The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could

put him to death, but they did not find any. ⁵⁶Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

⁵⁷Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: ⁵⁸"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will build another, not made by man.' " ⁵⁹Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

⁶⁰Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" ⁶¹But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.
Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"

⁶²"I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."

⁶³The high priest tore his clothes. "Why do we need any more witnesses?" he asked. ⁶⁴"You have he

ard the blasphemy. What do you think?"

They all condemned him as worthy of death. ⁶⁵Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the guards took him and beat him.

Peter Disowns Jesus

⁶⁶While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. ⁶⁷When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.
"You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus," she said.

But he denied it. "I don't know or understand what you're talking about," he said, and went out into the entryway.

⁶⁹When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, "This fellow is one of them." ⁷⁰Again he denied it.
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean."

⁷¹He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them, "I don't know this man you're talking about."

⁷²Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times." And he broke down and wept.

تدهین عیسی در بیت‌عَنْیا

۱دو روز به عید پِسَخ و فَطیر مانده بود. سران کاهنان و علمای دین در جستجوی راهی بودند که عیسی را به نیرنگ گرفتار کنند و به قتل رسانند،۲زیرا می‌گفتند: «نه در ایام عید، مبادا مردم شورش کنند.»

۳چون عیسی در بیت‌عَنْیا در خانۀ شَمعون جذامی بر سفره نشسته بود، زنی با ظرفی مرمرین از عطری بسیار گرانبها، از سنبل خالص، نزد عیسی آمد و ظرف را شکسته، عطر را بر سر او ریخت.۴امّا بعضی از حاضران به خشم آمده، با یکدیگر گفتند: «چرا باید این عطر اینگونه تلف شود؟۵می‌شد آن را به بیش از سیصد دینار فروخت و بهایش را به فقیران داد.» و آن زن را سخت سرزنش کردند.۶امّا عیسی بدیشان گفت: «او را به حال خود بگذارید. چرا می‌رنجانیدش؟ او کاری نیکو در حق من کرده است.۷فقیران را همیشه با خود دارید و هرگاه بخواهید می‌توانید به آنها کمک کنید، امّا من همیشه نزد شما نخواهم بود.۸این زن آنچه در توان داشت، انجام داد. او با این کار، بدن مرا پیشاپیش برای تدفین، تدهین کرد.۹آمین، به شما می‌گویم، در تمام جهان، هر‌جا انجیل موعظه شود، کار این زن نیز به‌یاد او بازگو خواهد شد.»

خیانت یهودا

۱۰آنگاه یهودای اِسْخَریوطی که یکی از آن دوازده تن بود، نزد سران کاهنان رفت تا عیسی را به آنها تسلیم کند.۱۱آنها چون سخنان یهودا را شنیدند، شادمان شدند و به او وعدۀ پول دادند. پس او در پی فرصت بود تا عیسی را تسلیم کند.

شام آخر

مَرقُس ۱۴:‏۲۲-۲۵ - اوّل قُرِنتیان ۱۱:‏۲۳-۲۵

۱۲در نخستین روز عید فَطیر که برۀ پِسَخ را قربانی می‌کنند، شاگردان عیسی از او پرسیدند: «کجا می‌خواهی برویم و برایت تدارک ببینیم تا شام پِسَخ را بخوری؟»۱۳او دو تن از شاگردان خود را فرستاد و به آنها گ

فت: «به شهر بروید؛ در آنجا مردی با کوزه‌ای آب به شما برمی‌خورد. از پی او بروید.۱۴هر‌جا که وارد شد، به صاحب

آن خانه بگویید، ”استاد می‌گوید، میهمانخانۀ من کجاست تا شام پِسَخ را با شاگردانم بخورم؟“۱۵و او بالاخانه‌ای بزرگ و مفروش و آماده به شما نشان خواهد داد. در آنجا برای ما تدارک ببینید.»۱۶آنگاه شاگردان به شهر رفته، همه‌چیز را همانگونه که به ایشان گفته بود یافتند و پِسَخ را تدارک دیدند.

۱۷چون شب فرارسید، عیسی با دوازده شاگرد خود به آنجا رفت.۱۸هنگامی که بر سفره نشسته، غذا می‌خوردند، عیسی گفت: «آمین، به شما می‌گویم که یکی از شما که با من غذا می‌خورد مرا تسلیم دشمن خواهد کرد.»۱۹آنها غمگین شدند و یکی پس از دیگری از او پرسیدند: «من که آن کس نیستم؟»۲۰عیسی گفت: «یکی از شما دوازده تن است، همان که نان خود را با من در کاسه فرو‌‌می‌بَرَد.۲۱پسر‌انسان همانگونه که دربارۀ او نوشته شده، خواهد رفت، امّا وای بر آن‌کس که پسر‌انسان را تسلیم دشمن می‌کند. بهتر آن می‌بود که هرگز زاده نمی‌شد.»

۲۲هنوز مشغول خوردن بودند که عیسی نان را برگرفت و پس از شکرگزاری، پاره کرد و به شاگردان داد و فرمود: «بگیرید، این است بدن من.»۲۳سپس جام را برگرفت و پس از شکرگزاری، به آنها داد و همه از آن نوشیدند.۲۴و بدیشان گفت: «این است خون من برای عهد [جدید] که به‌خاطر بسیاری ریخته می‌شود.۲۵آمین، به شما می‌گویم که از محصول مو دیگر نخواهم نوشید تا روزی که آن را در پادشاهی خدا، تازه بنوشم.»

۲۶آنگاه پس از خواندن سرودی، به سمت کوه زیتون به‌راه افتادند.

پیشگویی انکار پِطرُس

مَرقُس ۱۴:‏۲۷-۳۱ - مَتّی ۲۶:‏۳۱-۳۵

۲۷عیسی به آنان گفت: «همۀ شما خواهید لغزید زیرا نوشته شده،

«‌”شبان را خواهم زد

و گوسفندان پراکنده خواهند شد.“

۲۸امّا پس از آنکه برخاستم، پیش از شما به جلیل خواهم رفت.»۲۹پِطرُس به او گفت: «حتی اگر همه بلغزند، من هرگز نخواهم لغزید.»۳۰عیسی به او گفت: «آمین، به تو می‌گویم که امروز، آری همین امشب، پیش از آنکه خروس دو بار بانگ زند، سه بار مرا انکار خواهی کرد!»۳۱امّا پِطرُس با تأکید بسیار گفت: «اگر لازم باشد با تو بمیرم، انکارت نخواهم کرد.» سایر شاگردان نیز چنین گفتند.

باغ جِتْسیمانی

مَرقُس ۱۴:‏۳۲-۴۲ - مَتّی ۲۶:‏۳۶-۴۶؛ لوقا ۲۲:‏۴۰-۴۶

۳۲آنگاه به مکانی به نام جِتْسیمانی رفتند و در آنجا عیسی به شاگردان خود گفت: «در اینجا بنشینید، تا من دعا کنم.»۳۳سپس پِطرُس و یعقوب و یوحنا را با خود برد و پریشان و مضطرب شده، بدیشان گفت:۳۴«از فرط اندوه، به حال مرگ افتاده‌ام. در اینجا بمانید و بیدار باشید.»۳۵سپس قدری پیش رفته، بر خاک افتاد و دعا کرد که اگر ممکن باشد آن ساعت از او بگذرد.۳۶او چنین گفت: «اَبّا، پدر، همه‌چیز برای تو ممکن است. این جام را از من دور کن، امّا نه به خواست من بلکه به ارادۀ تو.»۳۷چون بازگشت، آنان را در خواب یافت. پس به پِطرُس گفت: «شَمعون، خوابیده‌ای؟ آیا نمی‌توانستی ساعتی بیدار بمانی؟۳۸بیدار باشید و دعا کنید تا در آزمایش نیفتید. روح مشتاق است امّا جسم ناتوان.»۳۹پس دیگربار رفت و همان دعا را کرد.۴۰چون بازگشت، ایشان را همچنان در خواب یافت، زیرا چشمانشان بسیار سنگین شده بود. آنها نمی‌دانستند چه به او بگویند.۴۱آنگاه عیسی سوّمین بار نزد شاگردان آمد و بدیشان گفت: «آیا هنوز در خوابید و استراحت می‌کنید؟ دیگر بس است! ساعت مقرر فرارسیده. اینک پسر‌انسان به‌دست گناهکاران تسلیم می‌شود.۴۲برخیزید، برویم. اینک تسلیم‌کنندۀ من از راه می‌رسد.»

گرفتار شدن عیسی

۴۳عیسی همچنان سخن می‌گفت که ناگاه یهودا، یکی از آن دوازده تن، همراه با گروهی مسلّح به چماق و شمشیر، از سوی سران کاهنان و علمای دین و مشایخ آمدند.۴۴تسلیم‌کنندۀ او به همراهان خود علامتی داده و گفته بود: «آن‌کس را که ببوسم، همان است؛ او را بگیرید و با مراقبت کامل ببرید.»۴۵پس چون به آن مکان رسید، بی‌درنگ به عیسی نزدیک شد و گفت: «استاد!» و او را بوسید.۴۶آنگاه آن افراد بر سر عیسی ریخته، او را گرفتار کردند.۴۷امّا یکی از حاضران شمشیر برکشیده، ضربه‌ای به خدمتکار کاهن‌اعظم زد و گوش او را برید.۴۸عیسی به آنها گفت: «مگر من راهزنم که با چماق و شمشیر به گرفتنم آمده‌اید؟۴۹هر روز در حضور شما در معبد تعلیم می‌دادم و مرا نگرفتید. امّا کتب‌مقدّس می‌باید تحقق یابد.»۵۰آنگاه همۀ شاگردان ترکش کرده، گریختند.

۵۱جوانی که فقط پارچه‌ای به تن پیچیده بود، در پی عیسی به راه افتاد. او را نیز گرفتند،۵۲امّا او آنچه بر تن داشت رها کرد و عریان گریخت.

محاکمه در حضور شورای یهود

۵۳عیسی را نزد کاهن‌اعظم بردند. در آنجا همۀ سران کاهنان و مشایخ و علمای دین گرد آمده بودند.۵۴پِطرُس نیز دورادور از پی عیسی رفت تا به حیاط خانه کاهن‌اعظم رسید. پس در آنجا، کنار آتش، با نگهبانان نشست تا خود را گرم کند.۵۵سران کاهنان و تمامی اهل شورا در پی یافتن دلایل و شواهدی علیه عیسی بودند تا او را بکشند، ولی هیچ نیافتند.۵۶زیرا هرچند بسیاری شهادتهای دروغ علیه عیسی دادند، امّا شهادتهای ایشان با هم وفق نداشت.۵۷آنگاه عده‌ای پیش آمدند و به دروغ علیه او شهادت داده، گفتند:۵۸«ما خود شنیدیم که می‌گفت، ”این معبد را که ساختۀ دست بشر است خراب خواهم کرد و ظرف سه روز، معبدی دیگر خواهم ساخت که ساختۀ دست بشر نباشد.“‌»۵۹امّا شهادتهای آنها نیز ناموافق بود.۶۰آنگاه کاهن‌اعظم برخاست و در برابر همه از عیسی پرسید: «هیچ پاسخ نمی‌گویی؟ این چیست که علیه تو شهادت می‌دهند؟»۶۱امّا عیسی همچنان خاموش ماند و پاسخی نداد. دیگربار کاهن‌اعظم از او پرسید: «آیا تو مسیح، پسر خدای متبارک هستی؟»۶۲عیسی بدو گفت: «هستم، و پسر‌انسان را خواهید دید که به‌دست راست قدرت نشسته، با ابرهای آسمان می‌آید.»۶۳آنگاه کاهن‌اعظم گریبان خود را چاک زد و گفت: «دیگر چه نیاز به شاهد است؟۶۴کفرش را شنیدید. حُکمتان چیست؟» آنها همگی فتوا دادند که سزایش مرگ است.۶۵آنگاه بعضی شروع کردند به آبِدهان بر او انداختن؛ آنها چشمانش را بستند و در حالی که او را می‌زدند، می‌گفتند: «نبوّت کن!» نگهبانان نیز او را گرفتند و زدند.

انکار پِطرُس

لوقا ۲۲:‏۵۶-۶۲؛ یوحنا ۱۸:‏۱۶-۱۸ و ۲۵-۲۷

۶۶هنگامی که پِطرُس هنوز پایین، در حیاط بود، یکی از خادمه‌های کاهن‌اعظم نیز به آنجا آمد۶۷و او را دید که کنار آتش خود را گرم می‌کرد. آن زن با دقّت بر وی نگریست و گفت: «تو نیز با عیسای ناصری بودی.»۶۸امّا پِطرُس انکار کرد و گفت: «نمی‌دانم و درنمی‌یابم چه می‌گویی!» این را گفت و به سرسرای خانه رفت. در همین هنگام خروس بانگ زد.۶۹دیگربار، چشم آن کنیز به او افتاد و به کسانی که آنجا ایستاده بودند، گفت: «این مرد یکی از آنهاست.»۷۰امّا پِطرُس باز انکار کرد. کمی بعد، کسانی که آنجا ایستاده بودند، بار دیگر به پِطرُس گفتند: «بی‌گمان تو نیز یکی از آنهایی، زیرا جلیلی هستی.»۷۱امّا پِطرُس لعن‌کردن آغاز کرد و قسم خورده، گفت: «این مرد را که می‌گویید، نمی‌شناسم!»۷۲در همان‌دم، خروس بار دوّم بانگ زد. آنگاه پِطرُس سخنان عیسی را به‌یاد آورد که به او گفته بود: «پیش از آنکه خروس دو بار بانگ زند، سه بار مرا انکار خواهی کرد». پس دلش ریش شد و بگریست.
