The Great Tribulation

(Revelation 7:14) is a period of great suffering and distress which will occur in conjunction with the Second Coming. It is often seen as a fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy of Daniel 9:24-27.

¹⁵ "So when you see the desolating sacrilege standing in the holy place, as was spoken of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand), ¹⁶ then those in Judea must flee to the mountains; ¹⁷ the one on the housetop must not go down to take what is in the house; ¹⁸ the one in the field must not turn back to get a coat. ¹⁹ Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! ²⁰ Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath. ²¹ For at that time there will be great suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. ²² And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. ²³ Then if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here is the Messiah!' or 'There he is!'--do not believe it. ²⁴ For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. ²⁵ Take note, I have told you beforehand. ²⁶ So, if they say to you, 'Look! He is in the wilderness,' do not go out. If they say, 'Look! He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. ²⁷ For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ²⁸ Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. ²⁹ "Immediately after the suffering of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken. ³⁰ Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see 'the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven' with power and great glory. ³¹ And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. ³² "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. ³³ So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. ³⁴ Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. ³⁵ Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. ³⁶ "But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. ³⁷ For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ³⁸ For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, ³⁹ and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. ⁴⁰ Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. ⁴¹ Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. ⁴² Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. ⁴³ But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. ⁴⁴ Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. ⁴⁵ "Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their allowance of food at the proper time? ⁴⁶ Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. ⁴⁷ Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. ⁴⁸ But if that wicked slave says to himself, 'My master is delayed,' ⁴⁹ and he begins to beat his fellow slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, ⁵⁰ the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know. ⁵¹ He will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

۱۵«پس چون آنچه را دانیال نبی ”مکروه ویرانگر“ نامیده در مکان مقدّس بر‌پا بینید - خواننده دقّت کند -۱۶آنگاه هر‌که در یهودیه باشد، به کوهها بگریزد؛۱۷و هر‌که بر بام خانه باشد، برای برداشتن چیزی، فرود نیاید؛۱۸و هر‌که در مزرعه باشد، برای برگرفتن قبای خود به خانه بازنگردد.۱۹وای بر زنان آبستن و مادران شیرده در آن روزها!۲۰دعا کنید که فرار شما در زمستان یا در روز شَبّات نباشد.۲۱زیرا در آن زمان چنان مصیبت عظیمی روی خواهد داد که مانندش از آغاز جهان تاکنون روی نداده، و هرگز نیز روی نخواهد داد.۲۲اگر آن روزها کوتاه نمی‌شد، هیچ بشری جان سالم به‌در نمی‌برد. امّا به‌خاطر برگزیدگان کوتاه خواهد شد.

۲۳«در آن زمان، اگر کسی به شما گوید، ”ببینید، مسیح اینجاست!“ یا ”مسیح آنجاست!“ باور مکنید.۲۴زیرا مسیحان کاذب و پیامبران دروغین برخاسته، آیات و معجزات عظیم به‌ظهور خواهند آورد تا اگر ممکن باشد، حتی برگزیدگان را گمراه کنند.۲۵ببینید، پیشاپیش به شما گفتم.۲۶بنابراین اگر به شما بگویند، ”او در بیابان است،“ به آنجا نروید؛ و اگر بگویند، ”در اندرونی خانه است،“ باور مکنید.۲۷زیرا همچنانکه صاعقه در شرق آسمان پدید می‌آید و نورش تا به غرب می‌رسد، ظهور پسر‌انسان نیز چنین خواهد بود.۲۸هر‌جا لاشه‌ای باشد، لاشخوران در آنجا گرد می‌آیند.

۲۹«بلافاصله، پس از مصیبتِ آن روزها

«‌”خورشید تاریک خواهد شد

و ماه دیگر نور نخواهد افشاند؛

ستارگان از آسمان فرو خواهند ریخت،

و نیروهای آسمان به لرزه در‌خواهند آمد.“

۳۰آنگاه نشانۀ پسر‌انسان در آسمان ظاهر خواهد شد و همۀ طوایف جهان بر سینۀ خود خواهند زد، و پسر‌انسان را خواهند دید که با قدرت و جلال عظیم بر ابرهای آسمان می‌آید.۳۱او فرشتگان خود را با نفیر بلند شیپور خواهد فرستاد و آنها برگزیدگان او را از چهار گوشۀ جهان، از یک کران آسمان تا به کران دیگر، گرد هم خواهند آورد.

۳۲«حال، از درخت انجیر این درس را فراگیرید: به محض اینکه شاخه‌های آن جوانه زده برگ می‌دهد، درمی‌یابید که تابستان نزدیک است.۳۳به همینسان، هرگاه این چیزها را ببینید، درمی‌یابید که او نزدیک، بلکه بر در است.۳۴آمین، به شما می‌گویم، تا اینهمه روی ندهد، این نسل از بین نخواهد رفت.۳۵آسمان و زمین زایل خواهد شد، امّا سخنان من هرگز زوال نخواهد پذیرفت.

۳۶«هیچ‌کس آن روز و ساعت را نمی‌داند جز پدر؛ حتی فرشتگان آسمان و پسر نیز از آن آگاه نیستند.۳۷زمان ظهور پسر‌انسان مانند روزگار نوح خواهد بود.۳۸در روزهای پیش از توفان، قبل از اینکه نوح به کشتی درآید، مردم می‌خوردند و می‌نوشیدند و زن می‌گرفتند و شوهر می‌کردند۳۹و نمی‌دانستند چه در پیش است. تا اینکه توفان آمد و همه را با خود برد. ظهور پسر‌انسان نیز همینگونه خواهد بود.۴۰از دو مرد که در مزرعه هستند، یکی برگرفته و دیگری واگذاشته خواهد شد.۴۱و از دو زن که با هم آسیاب می‌کنند، یکی برگرفته و دیگری واگذاشته خواهد شد.۴۲پس بیدار باشید، زیرا نمی‌دانید سرورِ شما چه روزی خواهد آمد.۴۳این را بدانید که اگر صاحبخانه می‌دانست دزد در چه پاسی از شب می‌آید، بیدار می‌ماند و نمی‌گذاشت به خانه‌اش دستبرد زنند.۴۴پس شما نیز آماده باشید، زیرا پسر‌انسان در ساعتی خواهد آمد که انتظارش را ندارید.

۴۵«پس آن غلام امین و دانا کیست که اربابش او را به سرپرستی خانواده خود گماشته باشد تا خوراک آنان را به‌موقع بدهد؟۴۶خوشابهحال آن غلام که چون اربابش بازگردد، او را مشغول این کار ببیند.۴۷آمین، به شما می‌گویم، که او را بر همۀ مایملک خود خواهد گماشت.۴۸امّا اگر آن غلام، شرور باشد و با خود بیندیشد که ”اربابم تأخیر کرده است،“۴۹و به آزار همکاران خود بپردازد و با میگساران مشغول خوردن و نوشیدن شود،۵۰آنگاه اربابش در روزی که انتظار ندارد و در ساعتی که از آن آگاه نیست خواهد آمد۵۱و او را از میان دوپاره کرده، در جایگاه ریاکاران خواهد افکند، جایی که گریه و دندان به دندان ساییدن خواهد بود.

There he is!'--do not believe it. ²² False messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. ²³ But be alert; I have already told you everything. ²⁴ "But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, ²⁵ and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

۱۴«امّا چون آن ”مکروه ویرانگر“ را در مکانی که نباید، بر‌پا ببینید - خواننده دقّت کند - آنگاه آنان که در یهودیه‌اند، به کوهها بگریزند؛۱۵و هر‌که بر بام خانه باشد، برای برداشتن چیزی، فرود‌نیاید و وارد خانه نشود؛۱۶و هر‌که در مزرعه باشد، برای برگرفتن قبای خود به خانه بازنگردد.۱۷وای بر زنان آبستن و مادران شیرده در آن روزها!۱۸دعا کنید که این وقایع در زمستان روی ندهد.۱۹زیرا که در آن روزها چنان مصیبتی روی خواهد داد که مانندش از آغاز عالمی که خدا آفرید تاکنون روی نداده و هرگز نیز روی نخواهد داد.۲۰و اگر خداوند آن روزها را کوتاه نمی‌کرد، هیچ بشری جان سالم به‌در نمی‌برد. امّا به‌خاطر برگزیدگان، که خودْ آنها را انتخاب کرده، آن روزها را کوتاه کرده است.۲۱در آن زمان، اگر کسی به شما گوید: ”بنگر، مسیح اینجاست“، یا ”بنگر، او آنجاست!“ باور مکنید.۲۲زیرا مسیحان کاذب و پیامبران دروغین برخاسته، آیات و معجزات به‌ظهور خواهند آورد تا اگر ممکن باشد، برگزیدگان را گمراه کنند.۲۳پس هشیار باشید، زیرا پیشاپیش، همۀ اینها را به شما گفتم.

۲۴«امّا در آن روزها، پس از آن مصیبت،

«‌”خورشید تاریک خواهد شد

و ماه دیگر نور نخواهد افشاند.

۲۵ستارگان از آسمان فرو‌خواهند ریخت

و نیروهای آسمان به‌لرزه در‌خواهند آمد
