Mark 6

A Prophet Without Honour

¹Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. ²When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.

"Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! ³Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.

⁴Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without hon

our." ⁵He could not do any miracles there, except lay

his hands on a few sick people and heal them. ⁶And he was amazed at their lack of faith.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. ⁷Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits.

⁸These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. ⁹Wear sandals but not an extra tunic. ¹⁰Whenever you enter a house, stay there until y

ou leave that town. ¹¹And if any place will not welcome you or lis

ten to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them."

nt out and preached that people should repent. ¹³They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

John the Baptist Beheaded

¹⁴King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."

¹⁵Others said, "He is Elijah."
And still othe

rs claimed, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago."

¹⁶But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, the man I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!"

¹⁷For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married. ¹⁸For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." ¹⁹So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, ²⁰because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.

²¹Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his

high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. ²²When the daughter o

f Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.

The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you." ²³And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom."

²⁴She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?"
"The head of John the Baptist," she answered.

²⁵At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."

²⁶The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. ²⁷So he immediately sent an executione

r with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, ²⁸and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. ²⁹On hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

³⁰The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. ³¹Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."

³²So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. ³³B

ut many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. ³⁴When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

³⁵By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late. ³⁶Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."

³⁷But he answered, "You give them something to eat."
They said to

him,

"That would take eight months of a man's wages! Are we to go and spend that muc

h on bread and give it to them to eat?"

³⁸"How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see."
When they found out, they said, "Five—and two fish."

³⁹Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. ⁴⁰So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. ⁴¹Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. ⁴²They all a

te and were satisfied, ⁴³and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. ⁴⁴The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.

Jesus Walks on the Water

⁴⁵Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, w

hile he dismissed the crowd. ⁴⁶After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.

⁴⁷When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. ⁴⁸He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, ⁴⁹but when they saw him walking on the lak

e, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, ⁵⁰because they all saw him and were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." ⁵¹

Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, ⁵²for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.

⁵³When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. ⁵⁴As soon as they got

out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. ⁵⁵They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. ⁵⁶And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all w

ho touched him were healed.

بی‌ایمانی مردم ناصره

۱سپس عیسی آنجا را ترک گفت و با شاگردان خود به شهر خویش رفت.۲چون روز شَبّات فرارسید، به تعلیم دادن در کنیسه پرداخت. بسیاری با شنیدن سخنان او در شگفت شدند. آنها می‌گفتند: «این مرد همۀ اینها را از کجا کسب کرده است؟ این چه حکمتی است که به او عطا شده؟ و این چه معجزاتی است که به‌دست او انجام می‌شود؟۳مگر او آن نجّار نیست؟ مگر پسر مریم و برادرِ یعقوب، یوشا، یهودا و شَمعون نیست؟ مگر خواهران او اینجا، در میان ما زندگی نمی‌کنند؟» پس در نظرشان ناپسند آمد.۴عیسی بدیشان گفت: «نبی بی‌حرمت نباشد جز در دیار خود

و در میان خویشان و در خانه خویش!»۵او نتوانست در آنجا هیچ معج

زه‌ای انجام دهد، جز آنکه دست خود را بر چند بیمار گذاشت و آنها را شفا بخشید.۶او از بی‌ایمانی ایشان در حیرت بود.

ریت دوازده شاگرد

سپس، عیسی در روستاهای اطراف می‌گشت و مردم را تعلیم می‌داد.۷او دوازده شاگردش را نزد خود فراخواند و آنها را دو‌به‌دو فرستاد و ایشان را بر ارواح پلید اقتدار بخشید.۸به آنان دستور داد: «برای سفر، جز یک چوبدستی چیزی با خود برندارید؛ نه نان، نه کوله‌بار و نه پول در کمربندهای خود.۹کفش به‌پا کنید، امّا جامه اضافی نپوشید.۱۰چون به خانه‌ای وارد شدید، تا زمانی که در آن شهر هستید، در آن خانه بمانید.۱۱و اگر در جایی شما را نپذیرند، یا به شما گوش فراندهند، آنجا را ترک کنید و خاک پاهایتان را نیز بتکانید، تا شهادتی باشد برضد آنها.»۱۲پس آنها رفته، به مردم موعظه می‌کردند که باید توبه کنند.

۱۳ایشان دیوهای بسیار را بیرون راندند و بیماران بسیار را با روغن تدهین کرده، شفا بخشیدند.

قتل یحیای تعمیددهنده

۱۴و امّا خبر این وقایع به گوش هیرودیسِ پادشاه رسید، زیرا نام عیسی

شهرت یافته بود. بعضی از مردم می‌گفتند: «یحیای تعمیددهنده از مردگان برخاسته و از همین‌روست که این قدرتها از او به‌ظهور می‌رسد.»۱۵دیگران می‌گفتند: «‌الیاس است.» عده‌ای نیز می‌گفتند: «پیامبری است مانند پیامبران دیرین.»۱۶امّا چون هیرودیس این را شنید، گفت: «این همان یحیی است که من سرش را از تن جدا کردم و اکنون از مردگان برخاسته است!»

۱۷زیرا به‌دستور هیرودیس یحیی را گرفته و او را بسته و به زندان افکنده بودند. هیرودیس این کار را به‌خاطر هیرودیا کرده بود. هیرودیا پیشتر زن فیلیپُس، برادر هیرودیس بود و اکنون هیرودیس او را به زنی گرفته بود.۱۸یحیی به هیرودیس گفته بود: «حلال نیست که تو با زن برادرت باشی.»۱۹پس هیرودیا از یحیی کینه به‌دل داشت و می‌خواست او را بکشد، امّا نمی‌توانست.۲۰زیرا هیرودیس از یحیی می‌ترسید، چرا‌که او را مردی پارسا و مقدّس می‌دانست و از این‌رو از او محافظت می‌کرد. هرگاه سخنان یحیی را می‌شنید، بسیار سرگشته و حیران می‌شد. با این‌حال، گوش فرادادن به سخنان

او را دوست می‌داشت.

۲۱سرانجام فرصت مناسب فرارس

ید. هیرودیس در روز میلاد خود ضیافتی به‌پا کرد و درباریان و فرماندهان نظامی خود و والامرتبگان ایالت جلیل را دعوت نمود.۲۲دختر هیرودیا به مجلس درآمد و رقصید و هیرودیس و میهمانانش را شادمان ساخت. آنگاه پادشاه به دختر گفت: «هرچه می‌خواهی از من درخواست کن که آن را به تو خواهم داد.»۲۳همچنین سوگند خورده، گفت: «هرچه از من بخواهی، حتی نیمی از مملکتم را، به تو خواهم داد.»۲۴او بیرون رفت و به مادر خود گفت: «چه بخواهم؟» مادرش پاسخ داد: «سَرِ یحیای تعمیددهنده را.»۲۵دختر بی‌درنگ شتابان نزد پادشاه بازگشت و گفت: «از تو می‌خواهم هم‌اکنون سر یحیای تعمیددهنده را بر طَبَقی به من بدهی.»۲۶پادشاه بسیار اندوهگین شد، امّا به‌پاس سوگند خود و به احترام میهمانانش نخواست درخواست او را رد کند.۲۷پس بی‌درنگ جلادی فرستاد و دستور داد سر یحیی را بیاورد. او رفته، سر یحیی را در زندان از تن جدا کرد۲۸

و آن را بر طَبَقی آورد و به دختر داد. او نیز آن را به مادرش داد.۲۹چون شاگردان یحیی این را شنیدند، آمدند و بدن او را برداشته، به خاک سپردند.

خوراک دادن به پنج هزار تن

و امّا رسولان نزد عیسی گرد آمدند و آنچه کرده و تعلیم داده بودند به او بازگفتند.۳۱عیسی به ایشان گفت: «با من به خلوتگاهی دورافتاده بیایید و اندکی بیارامید.» زیرا آمد و رفت مردم چندان بود که مجال نان خوردن هم نداشتند.۳۲پس تنها، با قایق عازم مکانی دورافتاده شدند.۳۳امّا به‌هنگام عزیمت، گروهی بسیار ایشان را دیدند و شناختند. پس مردم از همۀ شهرها پای‌پیاده به آن محل شتافتند و پیش از ایشان به آنجا رسیدند.۳۴چون عیسی از قایق پیاده شد، جمعیتی بی‌شمار دید و دلش بر حال آنان به‌رحم آمد، زیرا همچون گوسفندانی بی‌شبان بودند. پس به تعلیم آنان پرداخت و چیزهای بسیار به ایشان آموخت.۳۵نزدیک غروب، شاگردان نزدش آمدند و گفتند: «اینجا مکانی است دورافتاده و دیروقت نیز هس

ت.۳۶مردم را روانه کن تا به روستاها و مزارع اطراف بروند و برای خود خوراک بخرند.»۳۷عیسی در جواب فرمود: «شما خود به ایشان خوراک دهید.» گفتند: «آیا می‌خواهی برویم و دویست دینار نان بخریم و به آنها بدهیم تا بخورند؟»۳۸فرمود: «بروید و ببینید چند نان دارید.» پس پرس‌و‌جو کردند و گفتند: «پنج نان و دو ماهی.»۳۹آنگاه به شاگردان خود فرمود تا مردم را دسته دسته بر سبزه بنشانند.۴۰بدینگونه مردم در دسته‌های صد و پنجاه نفری بر زمین نشستند.۴۱آنگاه پنج نان و دو ماهی را برگرفت و به آسمان نگریست و شکر به‌جای‌آورد. سپس نانها را پاره کرد و به شاگردان خود داد تا پیش مردم بگذارند؛ دو ماهی را نیز میان همه تقسیم کرد.۴۲همه خورد

ند و سیر شدند،۴۳و از خرده‌های نان و ماهی، دوازده سبدِ پر گرد‌آوردند.۴۴شمار مردانی که نان خوردند پنج هزار بود.

راه رفتن بر روی آب

۴۵عیسی بی‌درنگ شاگردان خود را بر‌آن داشت تا در همان حال که او مردم را مرخص می‌کرد، سوار قایق شوند و پیش از او به بیت‌صِیْدا در آن سوی دریا بروند.۴۶پس از روانه کردن مردم، خود به کوه رفت تا دعا کند.

۴۷چون غروب شد، قایق به میانه دریا رسید و عیسی در خشکی تنها بود.۴۸دید که شاگردان به‌زحمت پارو می‌زنند، زیرا بادِ

مخالف می‌وزید. در حدود پاس چهارم از شب، عیسی گام‌زنان بر روی آب به‌سوی آنان رفت و خواست از کنارشان بگذرد.۴۹امّا چون شاگردان او را در حال راه رفتن بر آب دیدند، گمان کردند شبحی است. پس همگی فریاد برآوردند،۵۰زیرا از دیدن او بسیار وحشت کرده بودند. امّا عیسی بی‌درنگ با ایشان سخن گفت و فرمود: «دل قوی‌دارید، من هستم. مترسید!»۵۱سپس نزد ایشان به قایق برآمد و باد فرو‌نشست. ایشان بی‌اندازه شگفتزده شده بودند۵۲چرا‌که معجزه نانها را درک نکرده بودند، بلکه دلشان سخت شده بود.

۵۳چون به کرانه دیگر رسیدند، در سرزمین جِنیسارِت فرود‌آمدند و در آنجا لنگر انداختند.۵۴از قایق که پیاده شدند، مردم در‌دم عیسی را شناختند۵۵و دوان‌دوان به سرتاسر آن منطقه رفتند و بیماران را بر تختها گذاشته، به هر‌جا که شنیدند او آنجاست، بردند.۵۶عیسی به هر روستا یا شهر یا مزرعه‌ای که می‌رفت، مردم بیماران را در میدانها می‌گذاشتند و از او تمنا می‌کردند اجازه دهد دست‌کم گوشۀ ردایش را لمس کنند؛ و هر‌که لمس می‌کرد، شفا می‌یافت.
